Now that 2015 is all wrapped up, it is now time to reassess and discuss the best of Hip Hop in 2015. One of the many big debates this year was “Who had the hottest album?” This is always a great debate, however, to eliminate the heated arguments and back & forth bickering we can look directly at sales numbers. As a wise man once said, “Men lie, women lie, numbers don’t.” So let’s take a look at Billboard’s Top Ten Rap Albums of 2015.
“Trap Queen” hit-maker Fetty Wap has been crushing numbers and milestones all year. The New Jersey native was chosen as part of the XXL magazine 2015 Freshman Class, but he is doing things in Hip Hop most vets couldn’t achieve. He became the first male rapper with three songs in the top 20 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart since Eminem did so in 2013. He also became the first male rapper in four years to have singles reach the top 10 of the same chart at the same time since Lil Wayne did so in 2011. With his fourth single “Again”, Wap became the first act in the Hot Rap Songs chart’s 26-year history to chart his first four entries in the top 10 simultaneously.
Wap’s third single, “My Way,” peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. As of this month, the single has sold over 534,000 copies domestically. Today fans can finally watch the visual to Fetty Wap’s “My Way” by checking out the video below. The video is the perfect segue to this Friday’s release of Fetty Wap‘s self-titled debut album.

Kendrick Lamar surprised all of us with his unexpected release of his latest album, To Pimp A Butterfly. With the album’s strange roll-out it almost seems that Kendrick Lamar himself was also surprised of the album’s release. The album was originally scheduled to drop on Monday, March 23rd; however, Internet trollers stumbled across the album in unique fashion last Sunday when the clean version of the LP was released via iTunes. This was later followed by an explicit release on Spotify, and then finally an official explicit release on iTunes.
Even with its awkward release, Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly shattered Spotify’s single-day stream record, breaking the previous record set by Michael Buble‘s Christmas album. The groundbreaking album was streamed 9.6 million times in the 24 hours since its release and is on pace to blow away Kendrick’s previous album’s debut week numbers. This prediction is definitely a bold one, especially with good kid, m. A. A. d city being a critically acclaimed recently certified platinum album. However, don’t be shocked next week when Kendrick takes that number one spot on Billboard’s Hip-Hop charts with ease.
We still may be a little confused on whether Drake’s latest project is actually an album or a mixtape, but in either case his unexpected release debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late did better than any other release this year, aside from Taylor Swift’s 1989.
According to Billboard, the OVO delegate sold 495,000 copies during the first week. It was a slight disappointment because of its predicted 500,000 sales target, but at the end of the day it was a huge win for Drizzy.
Many people believed that Drake would have released this project for free, however, with it going retail it may have been a ploy by Drake to speed up his departure time from Cash Money Records. Drake is still diligently hard at work on his album, Views From The 6, which will be out later this year, and will reportedly be the final release needed to meet his 5 album deal with Birdman and Cash Money Records.
