[Hip Hop News Now] ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Tops Box Office Charts

LwoaE

N.W.A. biopic “Straight Outta Compton” exceeds expectations and tops the U.S. box office last weekend with $60.2 million. The film, which tells the story of the legendary N.W.A. rap group, was originally projected to bring in closer to $25 million for its debut. However, the movie not only crushed that projection, it also more than doubled its production budget of $29 million.

The success of “Straight Outta Compton” represents a huge win for Hip Hop. As the culture takes strides toward gaining respect, “Compton” has the best selling R-rated movie opening ever. It appears that ticket sales will have a bigger impact than record sales on the genre this year.

This movie will surely go down as a classic, now sitting in the company of films like “Boyz n the Hood,” and “Menace II Society.”

“Straight Outta Compton” is definitely a must see, so do yourself a favor and be sure to check it out.

[Hip Hop News Now] Pittsburgh Emcee Lua Proc Is Industry Ready

LuaProc_Pic 1

The Roundtable Empire recently caught up with Pittsburgh rap artist Lua Proc and we spoke about his passion for Hip Hop, his most recent experiences, and what is next for the talented emcee.

Paul “Lua Proc” Harris is a product of the Steel City. Born in the early 80’s, Proc has watched as the Rap scene has evolved over the years and now feels that he is what the game is missing.

In 1997, at the age of seventeen, Proc found himself as part of the street team for a local record label. “I was just doing everything I could to help that label,” said Lua Proc. “I wasn’t too much into the rapping then.” However, as things did not go as planned for Proc he decided to put his time and energy into creating his own path and started to push his own music. “My mom used to play all that music back in the day when I was a little kid. I’ve always loved poetry, so I was always a poet. I just always loved to make things rhyme and express how I felt about certain things. It was also a good way to tell my life story.  That’s what made me really want to do it,” said Lua Proc.

Proc describes his sound as a combination of the streets, the trap, the club, and the radio.  His musical influences are Tupac, the Notorious B.I.G., Rick Ross, and Kevin Gates.

LuaProc_Join The Movement

The Pittsburgh Hip Hop scene is buzzing right now and Western Pennsylvania is currently on deck to hit the national rap scene hard. “It’s time for us all to get together and start making it happen,” said Proc.

Lua Proc has worked with many emcees both locally and nationally.  He has worked with Pittsburgh rap artists like Owey and Asco. He has also been in the studio with nationally known artists such as Juvenile, B.G., Kevin Gates, and Young Buck.  Hip Hop listeners can catch Lua Proc’s latest banger featuring Kevin Gates on Sirius’ Hip Hop Nation, cable television’s Music Choice, and it’s soon to be heard on Pandora. The track is titled “Work” and it is currently getting a lot of national attention.  You may even catch the single on your local Hip Hop radio station. A visual for the record is soon to drop, but for now you can watch the trailer to “Work” below.

Most recently Proc has been working with Young Buck of the G-Unit. The two emcees collaborated on a track entitled “Retarded,” which will make its debut later in the year.  A visual for the track has already been shot in Pittsburgh.

[Hip Hop News Now] 50 Cent Gives His Take On Meek Mill, Drake, and Nicki Minaj

Screen Shot 2015-08-01 at 12.19.28 PM

50 Cent believes that Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj share the same exact opinions when it comes to Drake. Nicki hasn’t responded yet to the beef between Meek and Drake and it feels somewhat odd to 50.

“I think it’s really a Nicki [and] Drake thing going on,” 50 Cent says during an interview with St. Louis’ 104.1 FM. “I would think that he would be conscious of Nicki before he would just say something, when he knows Nicki and Drake have a relationship. Like, they’re down with each other. They’re in the same crew. Even if you just heard it randomly you would be talking to her before you say something publicly about it. Obviously she shares the same views, because she hasn’t really responded to it publicly.”

During the St. Louis 104.1 FM interview, 50 Cent spoke on his use of ghostwriters.

“I wrote everything,” 50 says. “One time I took a line [on] ‘Straight To The Bank.’ Because Kanye [did the chorus], while we were just chilling in the studio he said that. And then I copied the sound that he did—but we in the room, we playing around, we writing. That’s different to somebody writing your song.”

Deeper into the conversation, Fif also spoke about the beef between Wayne and Birdman.

“It just got crazier than I even imagined it could possibly be between the two of them,” 50 says. “They were like father and son relationship… I couldn’t see them actually trying to kill him. The stuff that I hear [going on with Young Thug], I don’t believe that. I can’t believe that he would actually want to kill him.”

50 also spoke on the beef between Ghostface Killah and Action Bronson.

“I don’t know why he said that stuff, man,” 50 Cent says. “I think Ghost gon’ catch him. I won’t lie, I really think he gon’ catch that kid.”

[Hip Hop News Now] Is 50 Cent Broke?

50 cent court 2

A recent bankruptcy filing by 50 Cent has sparked a whirlwind of hysteria in the entertainment industry and all who follow it. Now the self-proclaimed “King of New York” was quoted saying, “I take all of the jewelry and cars back to the stores.” Whoa!? A lot of onlookers had originally thought that Fif’s bankruptcy was a ploy to protect his assets from the $5 million he was ordered to pay in the case between him and Lastonia Leviston, the mother of Rick Ross‘ daughter.  This case stemmed from a sex-tape of Leviston and a former boyfriend that 50 used in a parody to throw jabs at Rick Ross.

Now things are even taking a sharper turn as Curtis Jackson aka 50 Cent testified in a Manhattan courtroom yesterday that his jewelry and cars are all for show.  Huh?  Fif who was listed by Forbes Magazine as one of the top five richest Hip Hop artists with a net worth of $155 million is now saying that his lifestyle is only a mirage.  During the hearing Jackson’s lawyer declares that his client is only worth $4.4 million dollars, which triggered his recent chapter 11 filing.  When the Judge asked 50 about selling 38 million records, 50 replied, “I only make 10 cents a record.”

Either Fif is a better act than we ever knew or this is just another example of how treacherous this Hip Hop game can be.  What do you think?  Is 50 Cent deserving of an Oscar for his portrayal of a broke emcee or is he just another victim of the entertainment industry?  Please let us know by commenting below or by voicing your opinion on Twitter and Facebook.

[Hip Hop News Now] Yasiin Bey (FKA Mos Def) To Perform At “Summer Recess” Concert In Philadelphia Hosted By Freeway

Screen Shot 2015-06-22 at 8.19.09 PM

Little Giant Creative presents the first-ever Summer Recess concert featuring international MC and actor Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), and hosted by Freeway, famed recording artist and Philadelphia native. The mid-summer concert will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Union Transfer at 8 pm.

Performing for an anticipated crowd of over 1,000 fans, Bey is making a rare appearance on the East Coast – and in the US – for this special night, at one of the Philadelphia’s newest and most popular venues. The intimate setting is ideal for the performers, who are known for their electric shows that prompt audiences to immerse themselves in the music.

“Summer Recess was conceived as a platform to not only satiate Philadelphia’s love for genuine hip hop music and exceptional lyricism, but to present the city as a mecca for independently produced and curated concerts that celebrate the best of undiscovered and extraordinary talent,” said Meegan Denenberg, partner at Little Giant Creative. “Sponsored by Heineken Green Room, we are continuing to create legendary musical experiences by bringing Yasiin Bey and Freeway together for this show.”

Both students of early Hip Hop music and role models for a new generation of rhyme slayers, Bey and Free have distinct styles that at times appear disparate. The Summer Recess concert will bridge the gap between their perceived differences, bringing together an eclectic audience of rap aficionados and Hip Hop lovers of all ages and backgrounds.

For Freeway, the show is about more than just rhyming on a stage.

“Philly is home, so coming back to host Summer Recess is an honor,” said the rapper. “With Yasiin Bey headlining, we’re giving Philadelphia – especially the younger generation – a taste of pure Hip Hop.”

Tickets go on sale today, June 22, 2015 at 12 pm here: The first 200 tickets purchased online will cost $25; the remaining advanced tickets will cost $30 ($35 if purchased the day of).  The concert is 21+. Visit Summer-Recess.com for more information.

[Hip Hop News Now] Lil Wayne Claims To Have Signed Deal With Jay Z

Jay-Z-Lil-Wayne-Tidal1

As we continue to patiently wait for Weezy’s album to release we have seen a lot unfold between Wayne and Birdman.  Oh and we can’t forget the supporting actors like Young Thug during this Hip Hop drama.  Since the debacle of Cash Money, there has been lawsuits, copycat albums, and even a shot up tour bus.  When will it all stop?  When will we finally get to hear Wayne’s new album that has since been retitled, Freezy Weezy???

Well, last night Lil Wayne took the stage at the Bay Area’s KMEL Summer Jam and announced, “I just signed a deal with my motherf**king idol, Jay Z”.  The audience went crazy, but it left me and other Hip Hop heads with even more questions.  Like, could he be referring to Jay Z‘s streaming service TIDAL, or did he actually sign with Roc Nation?  All of these are valid questions, especially with Wayne still being singed to Cash Money.  I guess only time will tell.

Check out the snippet of Lil Wayne making his announcement below.

UPDATE: Lil Wayne wasn’t referring to his signing on the dotted line with Jay Z regarding a record deal, but rather a deal with TIDAL that he signed earlier this month, making him the newest co-owner of the recently relaunched streaming service.

In this short trailer for “The Making of The Documentary 2, Part II” we explore both sides of the conflict; will you have peace, or will you rise against oppression with force? The choice is yours.
