[Hip Hop News Now] N.W.A. Biopic Trailer Features Intro By Dr. Dre and Ice Cube

N.W.A. is finally back, and this time on the big screen.  The legendary west coast supergroup will have their story told by Jonathan Herman and directed by F. Gary Gray.  The film is set to revolve around the rise and fall of the Compton, California rap group. Check out the synopsis below.

“In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A, Straight Outta Compton tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.”

The trailer for this epic biopic features words from Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and also Kendrick Lamar.  The trio speak on the power that Hip Hop holds and how it ultimately gives oppressed societies strength and a voice that is hard to ignore.

N.W.A. may have seen their rise to stardom a few decades ago, but their message still hits home today. Racism, poverty, and oppression are still seen as challenges for today’s generation.  The game hasn’t changed, only the players have.

The cast includes  Eazy-E played by Jason Mitchell,  Ice Cube played by O’Shea Jackson Jr., Dr. Dre played by Corey Hawkins, MC Ren played by Aldis Hodge and DJ Yella played by Neil Brown Jr.  Paul Giamatti also has a role in the film as Jerry Heller aka the guy who ultimately broke up N.W.A.

the hills pic

Filmmaker Stephen Stix Josey is a man on a mission. Most recently the Boston native has been busy leaving his mark on everything from music to films. The platinum music maker has produced for artists such as Mobb Deep, John Legend, and the Wu-Tang Clan. While music may have opened the door for Stix into the entertainment industry, he is now finding that film is where his talents have taken him. Currently the Producer/Director/Writer and Actor is putting his efforts towards a film that he believes will leave viewers with something to think about.

Stephen “Stix” Josey

“The Hills” is a story about a young man who finds his way into the Los Angeles Police Academy and discovers more than he had ever imagined. His quest in life has always been to carry on the legacy of his father, who was killed while on duty in Los Angeles. The young man’s life is quickly turned upside down when the killer of his father is now trying to kill him. He soon finds out what an injustice the justice system truly is when a selfish lawyer sides with the killer to bring him down for trying to protect himself. The film really challenges you to decide what side of the law are you on. “This is a film that gives you choices. It’s a film of integrity, a film of intelligence, and a film of overcoming and overachieving,” said Josey.

Credited as the writer and director of the film, Stix has his hands all over this movie. He is also the executive producer of the film and he can even be seen in front of the camera as he plays the role of Attorney Lee.

With having a great story to tell it was very important for Stix to find the right cast to bring this script to life, and that he did. “The Hills” brings its black star power to the big screen with actors like, Clifton Powell, Omar Gooding, Claudia Jordan, LaTavia Roberson, Maxine Jones, Cynda Williams, and Charles Malik Whitfield.

“All of these actors are good friends of mine,” said Stix, “Malik Whitfield and I go way back,”. Whitfield is most notably known for his outstanding portrayal of Otis Williams in the Emmy winning mini-series, “The Temptations.” Another close friend of Josey’s, Pittsburgh native and former “Wire“ actor Carl Clemons is playing the role of Tony Harris in the film.

Carl Clemons, Charles Malik Whitfield, & Lee Davis

Lee Davis, another Pittsburgh native, is joining Stix behind the scenes as a co-executive producer of the thriller. When The Roundtable Empire caught up with Davis he was very excited about being a part of “The Hills” project. For Davis it was the story and the people involved, along with the opportunity to practice some cooperative economics, that attracted him to this movie. Equally important to Lee was his chance to be a part of a historic moment for the indie filmmaker. “God has put me on a awesome path so I can give back the way I am supposed to,” says Davis. “Stephen Stix Josey has written a great script and now directing a great movie with an equally great and talented cast.”

The Hills-3

Dannon Green, Lee Davis, & Clifton Powell

The filming process for “The Hills” has just got underway in Atlanta and will continue for a few weeks there before finishing up in Los Angeles. The film is scheduled for release in July of this year and will be distributed through Sony Theatrical to a movie theater near you.

Written four years ago by Stix, “The Hills,” is on deck to deliver audiences a fresh, yet thought-provoking perspective, all while guiding them through the film’s many twists and turns.

“I want the public to put their own twist on it, to engage it, and for it to be another choice for them, another option for them, another opportunity for them to say ‘Wow, we can do great things…we can do all things,” stated Stix.

Be on the lookout for “The Hills” this summer and stay up to date with the film by staying connected with The Roundtable Empire via Facebook and Twitter. #WhereRoyaltyMeetsLoyalty

[Hip Hop News Now] Tidal versus Spotify: Are You Listening?

Okay, so recently there has been much talk about Jay Z’s streaming music service Tidal.  Most of the conversations are based around common questions. The biggest question being, “What is the benefit to using Tidal versus other music streaming platforms like Spotify?”  Yesterday, Jay Z and Tidal executive Vania Schlogel held an informative Q&A session at NYU.  The two Tidal reps spoke with students about the streaming service and how it differs from others.

From the artist’s standpoint, Jay Z boasts that Tidal is about to change the industry.  He believes that the payout structure in regards to royalties is a game changer and that both indie and major artists will be very pleased.  “There is no free tier and we’ll pay the highest royalty percentage. That’s how we’ll change the industry,” Hov said.

Tidal has proclaimed itself to be the first artist-owned streaming service.  The new platform looks to open new doors for all artists, even for those without a major deal.  “I’m on Tidal. I don’t have a record deal,” said Jay Z.  “All artists who come in — and this is an open platform, an open invitation — will participate in the equity upside.”

For listening subscribers, Tidal delivers a top quality sound.  It is the first music streaming service to combine the best high fidelity sound quality, high definition music videos, and expertly curated editorial.  The service has over 25 million tracks and 75,000 music videos.

It is too early in the game to know who will come out as the clear winner in all of this, but time will soon tell.  The real question is, can artists like Jay Z change the game from the outside in with power moves like the Tidal initiative?

[Hip Hop News Now] Kendrick Lamar Breaks Spotify’s Single-Day Record

Kendrick Lamar surprised all of us with his unexpected release of his latest album, To Pimp A Butterfly. With the album’s strange roll-out it almost seems that Kendrick Lamar himself was also surprised of the album’s release. The album was originally scheduled to drop on Monday, March 23rd; however, Internet trollers stumbled across the album in unique fashion last Sunday when the clean version of the LP was released via iTunes. This was later followed by an explicit release on Spotify, and then finally an official explicit release on iTunes.

Even with its awkward release, Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly shattered Spotify’s single-day stream record, breaking the previous record set by Michael Buble‘s Christmas album. The groundbreaking album was streamed 9.6 million times in the 24 hours since its release and is on pace to blow away Kendrick’s previous album’s debut week numbers. This prediction is definitely a bold one, especially with good kid, m. A. A. d city being a critically acclaimed recently certified platinum album. However, don’t be shocked next week when Kendrick takes that number one spot on Billboard’s Hip-Hop charts with ease.
